Hi Beth,
First I must tell you that it depends also on how much data do you have to
backup and how often do you have to do that.
If you don't have so much data you can buy a Flash RAM device, it's small
and the newest Flash RAM storage devices connect to your USB port, with no
driver installation required (plug-and-play). I think that a good 250Mb one
would be around $90 or less (I assumed that your backup size would be less
than 250Mb).
If your backup it's a little larger or you want to do the backup on
regularly basis you might consider buying a portable hard disk. Like the
flash drives the new portable hard disks require no driver install. You can
buy full sized drives that allow you a large storage and reasonably price or
you pay a little more and buy an ultra-portable drive that can fit in a
pocket and doesn't need separate power supply (prices can vary a lot, from
$30-40 to $500+, you can look for a detailed list in here

search_box--1.html)
If you have a CD/DVD writer you can backup your data on a CD or DVD
depending on how much do you have to backup. You won't be able to do that
with the backup program included in XP(professional version) so you will
need to use another one (like Backup4all for example :-))-

However, if you decide for a solution like ZIP drive or CD/DVD it is
recommended that you keep those in a safe place and be careful not to drop
them.
About the brands, well it depends on how much are you willing to pay and
what type of device you want. As a brand I tend to like Memorex for flash
drives, Seagate or Western for hard-disks and TDK for CD/DVD.
Hope it helps!
