Really dumb install question... |
 |
 |
|
|
08-08-04 10:05 PM
Please excuse this newbie question...but I really want to try Linux...and I
need to know this before I order SuSE...
I can't get my computer to boot from the cd drive...I'm running the evil Win
XP, and I can't get my 'puter to play ball and boot from the cd rom..
Question: to set-up SuSE 9.1., does the computer have to boot from the insta
ll cd?...or can you install SuSE while running XP, then re-boot from the har
d drive and choose SuSE???
Help...
Thanks

You have to boot from the CD. There's also a floppy + network option but
fewer and fewer computers have floppies these days.

Have you checked your BIOS settings to make sure the CD-ROM is set up to
boot before the hard drive?

Not on SuSE 9.1; it has boot images and modules required for floppy boot
installs in the "boot" directory of the 1st CD. I know because it's what
I used to install 9.1 on IBM 300GL desktop; it's a silly proprietary IBM
BIOS that doesn't allow CDROM booting. Ergo, El Flopperino.
The README file has clear instructions on creating/using boot floppies:
wyrd@deuce:~> more /media/cdrom/boot/README
Creating SUSE LINUX 9.1 Boot Disks
==================================
Due to increasing kernel size, there are now three boot disks.
You can create the boot disks if you have access to a running Linux
box or a running DOS box.
etc....YMMV, HTH.

You snipped too much. This is what I actually said, in full:

But you're right, I didn't include the floppy + CD option. Only if you
have no other option. In the OP's case I would doublecheck the BIOS
settings.

Hey...thanks for the help eveyone...if I understand correctly, the SuSe inst
all cd will walk me through setting up a floppy boot disk...I can boot from
that, then finish the install from the cd's... right???
...and, yes...I went into my bios set-up, and changed the settings to boot
from the cd drive...but no matter what I do ( disable the hard drive, etc) m
y computer will not boot from the cd drive, and Win Xp launches no matter wh
at I do...
...any suggestions on that would be appreciated, too!
Thanks...I look forward to trying Linux...

Just didn't want noobs to think the installer will boot ONLY from CDROM.
YMMV, HTH...

Yes. There are two or three floppies you will have to make.

Every bios is a bit different. I have the possibilaty to re-recognise my
Harddrives and so on. Perhaps that helps. To test REALLY turn off your
hard drives in the BIOS. Yes, you will not able to install or run
anything. It is just to see if even then Wintendo wants to take over.

What motherboard have you got or the make/model of computer, there used
to be a problem booting from cd if the drive was set as secondary slave
IIRC on older hardware, but if your machine is new`ish there should not
be any problem unless you have a dodgy bios or the CD-drive is very
old, dirty or failing also a bad cable or connection can cause similar
probs.
Can you read cd`s from the drive?

Will it install from the hard drive? Mandrake 8 would. On one of my PC's
it was the only way to get it installed.
