After following the install instructions from the Portal Toolkit download, I
 successfully created a simple portal project and ran it on the test server 
(also a struts example that came with the download).

When I elected to run/debug the project on the server my problems started. T
he same problem where the server console would report

[10/08/04 18:17:59:197 BST] 583cb6bb SystemOut     O Encrypt: Using DESe
deKeySpec..

And then the server would stop running. I can no longer run the same example
s without debugging either, so my installation looks well and truely messed 
up.

Why would selecting "debug on server" mess everything up? Is there a known w
ork around?

Attempting to run setup.exe for the Portal Toolkit does not help as the inst
aller knows the items are installed and has disabled the options. My only re
course seemd be to be to spend more hours re-installing WSAD and Portal Tool
kit from scratch.
