Howdy,

I run V2i Protector over our small network.

Now, for some reason, creating a new backup job takes an incredible
amount of time:

If I launch V2i, it now takes over ten minutes (after the splash
screen) before the two-panel opening screen displays fully.

If then, I click to create a new backup job, it goes to the window
that asks which drive (of three) we wish to backup, but takes over
twelve minutes to display that list of drives in the new window.

When we then click to specify the destination of the backup, it
displays something that looks like this:

(x) Network Drive
(x) Network Drive

(yes, the two "options" are the same, and both are checked)

That displays for about seven minutes. Then, finally, the screen
re-refreshes and provides the appropriate choice between a network, or
a local drive as the destination.

After all this, we can, indeed, create the new job, and it runs
properly.

Months ago, when we started using the product, the process of creating
a new backup job took no more than a minute. Now, it takes over
thirty.

What might be causing this incredible slow-down, and what might we do
about it?

Very sincere thanks,

--

Hmmm - well, one client I work with has a system (Windows XP with Office
2002). This particular person uses Microsoft Networking and has several
drive mappings. When they open Word/Excel there is a 20 to 30 second hold
when the do a File-Open or a File-SaveAs. We found out that if we detached
the mapped drives for systems that were not turned on there was no lag. It
seems that MS is 'trying' to see the full drive contents list and is timing
out for those that it can not have access to. Just a thought... Good
luck.

Howdy (again),

I just tried a little experiment...

I went to the machine in question, and disabled its network card.

I then launched V2i Protector, but with the same result I described
above.

Can you think of other possible explanations for this hassle?

Thanks again,

Kenneth, if you are using DVDs for backups, has the time for your Verify
Backup Image, increased in the last month? My image verify time has gone
from approx fifteen minutes to forty four minutes (my C:\ is approx 6gbs in
size) The only major thing that has changed on my computer is the IE
Security upgrade approximately a month ago. I had been using a Sony DRU
510A and now use a Sony DRU 540A device, but it did not help to change
burners. I should note that my V2i opens quickly and only takes approx five
minutes for a full C: image backup from one hard drive to another physical
hard drive. I have done a lot of trouble shooting but still no luck. My
next step is to upgrade the NET Framework from version 1.0 to 1.1. Sam.

Hi Sam,

No DVD. I backup from one system to another over the network.

The folks at Symantec are telling me that the problem might be that I
am running V2i and NAV on the same box (which, by the way, I was doing
from the start.) The funny part is that they describe this as a "known
problem" in exactly the tone that they would use were the second
product (Norton Anti-Virus) made by a rival company. Symantec, of
course, owns both products.

In any case, I still have the problem, but, in truth, it is a minor
nuisance only. The backups run perfectly and I rarely have to create a
new backup job.

I will post more if I learn more.

All the best,

Kenneth, prior to my current problem, I have never had any known conflict
between NAV 2004 and V2i. I had to laugh at what Symantec told you. I
should note that in my trouble shooting, I removed all major programs from
my computer except MS Office XP and Z2i and still had the same problem. My
gut feeling is that there is a corrupt DLL and so I may accomplish a windows
repair install. I installed SP2 last week without any difficulty but it did
not help the image verify file function problem. Will let you know if I
have any luck, Sam.

I think it might be related to the size of the job history. I have 3
servers here that all run jobs fine, except that the GUI takes forever to
load (maybe 5 minutes an a 2Ghz machine) I beleive it is because I have
over a year's worth of backup history in the logs. That's the only
difference I can see.

If I install V2i clean (no backup history yet) on a comparable machine (to
the same NAS destination), the GUI loads quickly.

Hi Paul,

Your interesting comment raises two questions:

Is there a (significant) downside to my deleting (or trimming) those
logs? And, if none, how would I do it? That is, which are they?

Thanks for any further thoughts,
