All,

I just wondered if anyone has any dealings with VTL's, and speciifcally
Copan and Sepaton?

We are looking at integrating a virtual library into our NetBackup (4.5)
infrastructure and I would be interested in peoples experiences with this...

Also - Has anyone taken a nose at EMC's CDL (Clariion) with a "head" bolted
onto it.

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Thks,

jOwLeY

I have been using Virtual Tape Library from Mayastor and it is working fine
so far (specifically BackupExec). It is really cool software that lets you
configure as many tape drives as you want. You would need one Redhat Linux
server and qlogic FC HBA for this. You can download the software from
http://www.pavitrasoft.com/downloads/
Cheers

take a look at the Overland REO1000 & 4000
they're 1TB & 2TB iSCSI & Fibre Channel D2D appliances
in addition to allowing software that supports D2D backups,
they emulate (multiple) LTO2 drives for concurrent backups
across the LAN (MAN or WAN)

FYI - NetBackup includes disk staging in its base license. Try that and save
yourself some bucks.

The Pathlight VX from ADIC has EMC disk but the head is all ADIC
software. The EMC CDL has the same disk but FalconStor software (no
thanks). The Pathlight VX is a much more integrated solution when
combined with ADIC's LTO tape libraries or ADIC OEM'd (IBM and DELL)
given that is has a direct path to tape and can scale much better. I
would recommend that you use EMC as your disk provider for
applications and online storage (CLARiiON/DMX), but go with ADIC for
backup and recovery with their disk/tape combination given that is
where they play.

We use a CLARiiON CX700 plus an older CX600 for primary storage and
Pathlight VX/Scalar i2000 for backup/recovery with CommVault Galaxy.
Support has been solid for all three. CommVault does has a disk based
backup module, but the Pathlight get your backups off your SAN much
faster and cleaner.
