On many cameras you can set the transfer mode. The easiest way (IMO) is
to configure the camera to act as an USB mass storage device. That way
you only have to load the usb-storage and sd_mod drivers, and mount the
device (like an SCSI hard disk). Some linux distributions even set up
desktop icons automatically to access the devices, although I think if
you use Debian, you have to configure the hotplug daemon to do that
yourself.
You should also take a look at the USB digital camera HOWTO:

and use the Google Groups usenet search. Enter "HP 620 camera linux",
this gave some results that looked helpful to me.
