The HP 620 is the only camera I've tried, so I don't have anything to
compare it with.  I works under Win98, but it won't work under any
variation of Linux.  Has anyone had any luck with this camera?  It connects
through USB by something called PTB.

My normal Linux installation is Debian.  The one I'm on now started out as
Libranet 2.7 and now it's essentially Debian Unstable.  I always have two
other installs - currently a Xandros (also Debian) and a PCLinuxOS.  None
of my other installs has ever been able to configure the camera either.
Nor have I had any luck with any of the live cds I've tried.

If anyone has got one of these working I'd love to know how.

On many cameras you can set the transfer mode. The easiest way (IMO) is
to configure the camera to act as an USB mass storage device. That way
you only have to load the usb-storage and sd_mod drivers, and mount the
device (like an SCSI hard disk). Some linux distributions even set up
desktop icons automatically to access the devices, although I think if
you use Debian, you have to configure the hotplug daemon to do that
yourself.

You should also take a look at the USB digital camera HOWTO:

and use the Google Groups usenet search. Enter "HP 620 camera linux",
this gave some results that looked helpful to me.
