I decided to use one of my shelved 45 GB drives as a backup device. I
purchased a USB 2.0 case, popped in the drive, hooked it up to me XP Pro
system and got myself some backup media.

The purpose if two-fold: make a bit for bit complete backup of my OS
partition, and save off my data and documents directories. My question
regards the formatting of this backup drive. Are there any backup and
restore programs that will completely restore my OS and do it if the drive
is NTFS formatted?

Howdy,

No expert I, but...

I have used Drive Image and V2i Protector successfully to do just what
you describe. It is my understanding that this is precisely what all
"imaging software" is designed to do though, no doubt, the various
products may differ on some specifics.

HTH,

If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

Thanks Kenneth. Can you tell me what your thoughts were between these two
programs?

I use Acronis True Image 7.0 and it works fine backing up my hard drive to
an external WD 80 GB USB2 Drive. I have about 14GB used on my 80 GB C Drive
and it takes about 25 minutes to backup the image. I use the recovery CD to
boot from and my USB drive and image files are visible.
