Just installed a tekram DC-390U4W SCSi card (LSI chipset, MPT-Fusion
BIOS) in a server running RedHat ES 3.0.
I have a Compaq/Sony SDX 400C attached externally to the SCSI card (and
no other devices attched).
I can't get Linux to see the tape drive - any help appreciated

Can it see the SCSI card? Can you post the output of dmesg please.

It should appear as /dev/st0.

In SuSE there is a SuSE Plugger tool that shows scsi devices and
associations. I assume RHEL has similar.

Nothing shows in /proc/scsi/scsi - but the hardware browser shows both
channels of the SCSI card - which is why I'm after some help on this

Didn't think so, as the hardware browser seems to show rhe 2 scsi ports
on the card, although /proc/scsi/scsi doesn't show any devices attached
to it.

My hardware browser reveals for SCSI devices:

AIC-7902B U320
Manufacturer Adaptec
Drive aic79xx

AIC-7902B U320
Manufacturer: Adaptec
Driver:       aic79xx

(it is a dual channel controller)

and for Tape Drives:

Exabyte VXA-2
Manufacturer: Unknown
Driver:       none or built-in
Device        /dev/st0

Is the unit number on your tape drive set correctly?

Was the tape drive powered on when the system was booted? I know with my
SCSI stuff (on my other computer), if the devices are not powered on when
I boot the system, they are invisible and useless and require a reboot to
make them work. Fortunately for me, this is only the external CD-ROM
burner that I seldom use. I now just leave it powered on all the time.
