Hi,

Believe me when I say I've searched for the answer to this dilemma for
days now, and nothing works.

I have a Redhat 9 server running sendmail, being NAT'd by a firewall.

I need to be able to allow clients who roam around on everything from
laptop modems to semi-static IP DSL connections to connect to the
server and use it as an SMTP relay after authenticating with SMTP
AUTH.

Previously, this server was not NAT'd, rather it was running behind a
firewall but on a live IP. SMTP AUTH ran absolutely fine for ages. We
recently moved datacentre, and it's stopped working.

We're getting 5.7.1 Relaying Denied / IP Lookup failed errors all over
the place now, and it's driving me crazy trying to track them down and
fix.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris.

Just one. Provide some information. Based on the comprehensive data you have
provided, we can say that something is wrong.

Relaying Denied isn't an error, it's a status message.

Relaying mail is disabled in the config on the mail server in question
(you need to determine which mail server that is). If it's your server
returning the message you can do something about it. If it's your ISPs
server it's out of your hands unless they'll change their server for you.

Look up SMTP mail relay for whatever SMTP server you're using.

Hi,

I sorted this problem late last night.

It was nothing to do with sendmail, it's configuration, or the server
itself.

It was because cisco PIX firewalls have a bug in them, which basically
prevents SMTP relaying from happening on a NAT'd server like ours.

The fix was to add the following:

no fixup protocol smtp 25

Everything worked 10 seconds later. Bloody PIX.

Thanks anyhow.

C.

Thanks for posting this follow-up! All these Usenet threads are stored in a
perpetual public archive (groups.google.com), and someone will very likely
encounter your posted remedy when they search for solutions to the same
problem in the future.

Wow.

What was returning the Relaying Denied message then?
