    problem with drivers?

I use Nero6 to burn DVDs and have recently had a high failure rate (approx
50% of disks being unreadable). I think it could be a hardware problem but
I just wanted to check it wasn't a problem with drivers. When I look at the
DVD drive's properties in MyComputer it's got 5 different driver files, 4 of
them are Microsoft ones and dated 2001, but the fifth one is GEARAspi.dll,
by Gear Software 2004. I'm not sure where this Gear software one has come
from since I've never used anything by Gear Software afaik. I suspect this
drivers just got onto the system recently. Is it possible this could be
causing the burning problems I've been having? If it is the problem, how
can I go about removing it?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

No drivers files are required and the
drivers file button is greyed out.

This is installed with Drive Image (I think) and V2i Protector desktop
(for sure). I have Nero 5.something and have no conflicts, BTW.

Whether drivers are needed depends on the OS - which neithe poster has
named.

Neither did REX identify his drive.

Under the circumstances, the best suggestion I can offer is to go to the
drive manufacturer's WWW site and look for information and drivers;
perhaps there are more recent ones that are appropriate; even if not,
you may learn something about using that drive in whatever OS you are
running.

However, the description - with no citation of any error message - is
not characteristic of faulty drivers. If we knew what sort of error on
what sort of burn with what media, there's a chance that help would be
available. A second posting may help if REX provides the missing
information.

Try deleting the DVD drive in [Control Panel, Device Manager], and let
Windows reinstall the drive.

Hi, I'm using Windows XP and the drive is an LG Electronics GSA4082B.
What's happening is that Nero appears to burn everything ok, but then when
it goes through the verify stage it reports that some of the files are
inaccessible. If I then try to access these files through windows explorer
some error message appears and the file can't be read. I updated to the
latest version of Nero a few weeks ago, I wondered if this could have caused
the problem but after uninstalling it and reinstalling the version I was
using before, the problem is still there. I've been burning to DVD +RW
and -RW media, creating ISO DVD ROMs. The disks I'm using are Verbatim,
Datawrite, Imation and Memorex, all 4x. The problem does seem to occur more
often with some particular disks, but I used to be able to use all these
disks without ever having any problems. I haven't tried using any
recordable media recently.

I'm thinking that the drive itself is probably faulty. I'm not sure if
there's anything else I can do.

That must be where the drivers come from. I installed Drive Image about 3
months ago. The problem with the dvd burner is more recent so I guess it
must be something else. Cheers.

Your problem seems more likely to be with the media. I gather that you
have reused the same discs frequently and may be deluded by the hype to
believe that they can be reused indefinitely. So far, all indications
are that they have the same sort of fragility and the same sort of
limited lifetime (measured in erase cycles) as erasable CDs.

What happens is that the error rate on erasables increases with each
erasure. When I was using them to store data (as opposed to reserving
them for tests), I felt fortunate to get more than 10-20 cycles - and
even then could see the error count climbing.

Unless you can pin the problem down to the drive, I doubt that you'll
get an improvement in a replacement under warranty even if they would
give it to you.

You could be right about it being the media, although most of the disks
haven't been used more than 2 or 3 times, and the problems also occurred
with disks that have never been used before.

I think I'll look for some better quality disks and see how it goes with
them.

Cheers.
