We just upgraded our 5.5 exchange box to Windows 2003/Exchange 2003.

Exchange is being backed via Veritas 9.1 running on a second box on
the same domain.

Veritas is reporting the following on a number of mailboxes;
Access denied to file John Smith [JohnS] Top of Inforomation Store
Inbox <No Subject>

I've examined a number of mailboxes using Outlook and I have been able
to delete a number of the messages causing the error. However, I
cannot delete all of the messages. On those I get the following error
in Outlook when I try to delete them;
"The item was found to contain a virus that could not be cleaned. For
more information contact your Exchange Administrator"

We're running Symantic AntiVirus Corporate Edition and have it
watching Exchange. Symantec's set to scan and for viruses and delete
them if it finds one, otherwise, if it cannot do the delete, it will
quarantine the offender.

My first option is to tell the backup to ignore each of the files that
is causing the problem. That is viable but not the best option.

My second option is to delete the offending messages, which I would do
except I cannot do it through Outlook.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to what is happening here and/or how to
delete the undeletable messages?

Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric
I've got the same error, only on one mail box, but the backup job registers
as failed everynight.
Did you find a solution?
I've been scowering the net and although there are lots of references to thi
s particular fault, I cannot find any answers.
Veritas website suggests turning off AV software on exchange for the duratio
n of the backup.
I'd prefer to fix the problem rather than risk causing others
Can you help me please?

Regards
Phil

P.S.
Regarding the Media Overwrite problem. Are you using Backup Exec? Change the
backup job so that it does not check for Write protection and will overwrit
e media. Failing that wait two weeks and it might sort itself out.
Cheers,

All you need to do to fix this issue is turn off mail box cache on the clien
ts OR delete all the .ost files on the clients. the first option is the bes
t since mail box cache can screw with your backups as well. hope that is us
eful...

--turn off the cache--
tools > email accounts > view > click next > exchange email account > click
change > more settings >advanced. uncheck cached exhange mode.

I get an error like:

Access denied to file SMTP (Servername - SID) when I am backupping Excange 2
003 with Version 9.1.

I think it's a corrupt mail but all I have is a SID and I don't know how to
trace it to a user

Who can help??
