Having some problems setting up and using TOR, any help, suggestions
available?  Win 2k

Let me try the whole thing again from the beginning and I will try to
document exactly where the problems arise.   If I recall, it won't
install properly.

I just manually  copied and pasted the files in place.  I
manually deleted the above two files, got the windows executable and
installed from that.  TOR now starts fine, no problems.

Thanks for the Socratic question, that did the trick.

Now in process of reading documentation for setup.  Not quite
sure yet what exactly privproxy does.  Seems like TOR operates
somewhat similarly to JAP or like Secure CRT for SSH, both of which I
already use.

Just a quick look does not reveal privproxy's purpose other
that "cleanup?"

I'm sure that more questions will follow.  Thanks.

I addressed this in a post to AP that I forgot to cross to APAS. Which
was stupid because I cut/pasted from this group to there. 

Anyway, here's my "explanation" again for what it's worth. I know you
read both groups, but others may not and I think it's a fairly good
assessment. Feel free to think otherwise and/or flame as you see fit. ;)

Tor and JAP are "similar". They both use encryption to secure a
connection and a distributed network to "mix things up a bit" and
provide additional privacy/anonymity. Secure CRT and SSH connections use
encryption for security, but don't provide that "mixing" by themselves.

To the average user they're all "similar" in that they all function
through software that resides on your machine... a "local proxy"
scenario.

Privoxy adds an additional layer of protection. The above methods secure
your connection... they operate on the "low level" stuff. Privoxy helps
manage the information that flows over that connection... or the "high
level" stuff.

Think of it like a hose carrying water... if you don't want someone to
know where the water is coming from you could build a fake wall with a
false faucet and feed water to it with a hose, attaching a second hose
to the fake faucet. To the casual observer it would look like the water
was originating from that faucet when it's really just a "pass through".

That's all good as far as it goes, but the water *itself* might contain
some clues about where the water comes from... like lead content or some
other chemical property. Privoxy is a "water filter" that attempts to
remove these impurities from the information flowing through the hose
itself. And in the online world, getting information from unclean water
is a *lot* easier than it is with real water. ;) Both types of
protection are necessary to achieve any real level of privacy or
anonymity.

It's not absolutely necessary to install OpenSSL but IME having
incorrect or incompatible versions of LIBEAY32.dll and/or SSLEAY32.dll
can lead to the errors such as that which the OP was experiencing
therefore for most Windows users I suspect it is easier for them to
install OpenSSL than it is to find the correct versions of the files
they need.

Both up and running now with no problems, had a little problem
getting the syntax of the  socks4a statement correct in the
config.text.  I missed that space between end of statement and period.
At any rate works great, really low latency, not like JAP and
certainly not like chaining proxies.

Would really like to get more feedback from consol about which
nodes are chained and how many in chain.  I see a chain of three only.
Once I read all documentation and design document probably will find
that this is an adjustable parameter.

I like this setup, fast.
