Semi-OT question re: Hacking |
 |
 |
|
|
09-23-04 02:21 AM
I recently posted several messages to some usenet newsgroups under a
pseudonym. In hostile replies to my posts, a poster used my real name. I
did not know the poster, but I did some research on his usenet nym and found
out he is a frequent poster to alt.hackers.malicious and alt.2600.
My question is, How did he get my real name? I had not posted any messages
under my real name. I have checked the headers of every post I made, and
not one contains my real name or email address or anything else that could
identify me, as far as I know. I have checked and can find no evidence of
spyware on my computer. I have gone back and checked the suspicious
websites I visited recently, studied the html source code and found no code
or controls that were clearly used to read cookies.
So, How did he get my name?

Yes, but I didn't post from them. I posted from earthlink.net. Honestly, I
don't think there is anything in the post headers that could be traced back
to me. I've studied them. The tracepath is from earthlink's nntp server.
What I'm really beginning to suspect is that he called up my isp under some
official pretense or has a friend at the isp. I've noticed that there is a
small group of people who seem to magically get the names of other posters.
I'm wondering if they are friendly sysadmins or something.
Is this something that happens on the usenet? Can people who know people
just call up an isp like earthlink, give them a Message-ID and get the
poster's account information? Or can they hack into earthlink?

Without access to the name you used, or the messages
you posted, it's difficult to say anything, Ms. Campbell.

It's difficult for you to say anything because you're an arrogant idiot.
BTW, my name is not Campbell. It isn't even Janelle. LOL.

How do you expect people to help you on an off-topic question if you
reply to their (admittedly smartass) requests for more information
with insult?

Maybe. Who knows? This is USENET, after all.

Oh dear, a sensitive nature. No wonder you upset the
trolls on "some usenet newsgroup".

Sorry to hear that. Janelle is a really nice name.

You know, you come into a group asking for help, someone posts a response
you don't like, and you respond like this rather than ignoring it? That's
a good way to get exactly nobody interested in spending any time at all
helping _you_ with _your problem_.
Bye, whoever you are. You're on your own. I might have spent time on
this, but not now.
