When I edit a product using fp1 Catalog Manager I do not get a Variant tab.
What are the prerequisites that need to be setup for this tab to show up.  I
am assuming that there is a problem in my product configuration which is
preventing this.  Any help would be appriciated.

You will need to define your products using a product family definition
instead of a product definition. You can create a product family definition
by adding variant properties to the product definition. Follow the
following steps to do so which are from the help documentation section
"Adding a Catalog Product Definition Using Business Desk". Once you have
created this definition, create your products based on this definition. You
should then see the variants tab.

A product definition specifies the properties for a particular type of
product. For example, an online music retailer would create a product
definition for the product Compact Discs. The product definition would
contain the following properties: Artist, Title, and List Price.

Notes
-The list price property is automatically included in each product
definition.
-Do not add as a product variant property any properties that will be used
as product IDs.

To add a product definition to a catalog definition

1) Verify that you have already created the property definitions that you
want to add to your product definition. For more information about creating
property definitions, see Adding a Catalog Property Definition.
2) In Commerce Server Business Desk, in Catalogs, click Catalog Definition
Designer.
3) In the Catalog Definition Designer: Category Definitions screen, click
on the toolbar, and then select Product Definitions from the drop-down
list.
4) In the Catalog Definition Designer: Product Definitions screen, click
on the toolbar.
5) In the Product Definition: New screen, in the Name box, type a name for
the new product definition.
6) In the Product Properties section, select the property or properties you
want for the new product definition from the list of Available Properties,
and then click Add.
Note
-You cannot remove the assigned properties that are highlighted in
yellow. These are properties that have the Assign to all product types
attribute.
7)If the new product has variants, in the Product Variant Properties
section, select the property or properties you want from the Available
Properties list, and then click Add.
Note
-Do not add as a product variant property any properties that will be
used as product IDs.
8)To change the order of the properties, select the property you want to
move, and then click either Move Up or Move Down until the property is in
the position you want. The order in which the properties appear in the
Assigned Properties box is also the order in which the properties are
displayed in the catalog.
9)To save the product definition and return to the Catalog Definition
Designer: Product Definition screen, click  on the toolbar.

Wasn't the FP1 CatalogManager supposed to be able to do all the catalog base

I have added the Product Definition and I can modify the Variants in
BizDesk.  I want to know why the Variants tab is not showing up in the
FP1 Catalog Manager.  From the FP1 help file it clearly shows a
Variant Tab in the Product Edit dialog box.  I am unsure why it is not
showing up for products which are using a product definition which
contains variant fields.  Any Ideas?

There are  be two conditions for the Variants tab to be displayed in the
EditProducts tab
1. When you create the catalog you should also define a VariantId for it
2. The actual Product definition you are creating the product for should
contain variant properties

The variants tab will not show for products whose definition does not
contain variant properties

Thankyou for the clarification.  The catalog I was using was created
through an import into BizDesk.  As a result the VariantId was not
setup in the catalog and could not be modified.
