cannot even access sites that have "privacy" in their headers.

Is there a type of server I connect to through this proxy so I can
surf freely on the other side?  I wouldn't mind paying for an account
on a server that would allow me to do what I need to do.

Where in the Emirates are you located? It may be you're censored at the
"national" level, and any encrypted communications might draw attention
to you faster than anything else.

FWIW, A friend I have in that area of the world in fluent in German, and
uses one of those automatic translator services like
translate.google.com to sneak past a similar company proxy on occasion.
It's a long shot... and you'd have to know another common language well
enough to read it or find some sort of local way to translate back. and
the translators aren't perfect, so you'd have to put up with some
goofyness.

It's also very insecure. It would be very easy to figure out if someone
spotted it, although for very occasional use it may pass as typical
foreign traffic. Ride at your own risk.

I'm in AD.  I have no trouble using https; do it every day.  I suspect
that if censorship requires any real effort on their part, they don't
bother.  I'll bet that it's all done passively, eg. by scanning header
keywords.

Interesting -- definitely worth a shot, if my hunch about their method
is right.

I would suspect the same, knowing a tiny bit about your area from
conversations with others. If you use encrypted connections without
problems it shouldn't be a problem using something like an SSL proxy
connection to hide *all* content from whatever filtering they use, and
surfing anywhere you want without worrying about the filter.

There's probably a bunch of free web based HTTPS proxy servers you could
use, although I find them unreliable and sometimes invasive of your
privacy themselves. FWIW, I found this "direct to SSL" link near the top
of the list with a quick Google. There's probably a lot more
available...

I know nothing about them, but they should at least give you a starting
point. You can Google for more "privacy" pages from there. 

Here's a list of free web based proxise, some of them no doubt offer
HTTPS...

You could also subscribe to something. Of course setting it up would
mean you probably visit a site where the word privacy appears. <grin>
The translator trick may help you a bit with this. Something like the
above free proxy would probably help a lot. It may also be possible to
contact one of the privacy providers by email or telephone, and set
things up that way.

You might also be able to sign up online with a typical privacy provider
without using "normal" HTTP. Not to shill for any particular service,
but just as example, the Cotse "reserve an account" page can be accessed
directly at...

Actual account payment can be done in a number of ways including regular
mail, telephone bill "1-900" type payment, secure online credit card
payments, etc. I have no idea how your particular location might impact
your ability to use any of these payment options. I'd suspect the
telephone billing might be a problem though...???

There's probably any number of other services that will allow you to set
up an account in ways that make your WWW filtering problem go away. If
you want to do things this way I'd ask in another thread. I'm sure
you'll get many different offers.

If you're not concerned with actually hiding your browsing habits. That
part is critical and needs repeated even though I believe you already
understand it. ;)
