Is it possible to run a web server on a machine that is behind a
firewall using Network Address Translation (NAT)?

A friend of mine has an ADSL link, with a modem/router/firewall that
does network address translation. He has one static IP. He wants to
put some documents on a web server that only he can access. I asusme
the best way is to use a username/password page, that uses SSL, so the
password is not sent in plain text.

Is this possible to do? I don't fancy building Apache, SSL, setting up
certificates etc (none of which I have done before), just to find out
it can't be done.

Sure, as long as you don't mess with the protocol.
