Hi,

W2000 Advanced Server SPK4 with net updates:

It seems that W2000 is running but extremely slowly,
taking 10 minutes to go from boot to logon then messages
network connections, personal details come up.

A userinit.exe - Application Error window is coming up
with the message 'The application failed to initialise
properly (oxcoooo142). Click on OK to terminate the
application.

When you click on OK only the background appears but no
desktop icons, etc.

Regards
Jules

Sounds like the shell failed to start for some reason. What happens if you;
Task Manager|File|New Task|explorer.exe
then check Event Viewer for errors, or you may be able to get to Event
Viewer through;
Task Manager|File|New Task|%windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc

Also check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at the
Reg_Sz string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

HI Dave,

Couldn't get explorer to run and the start menu and taks
bar flashes up intermittently but rarely. Ctrl-Esc does
not have any affect.

Going to admin tools|computermgt| the following error
comes up 'Snap in failed to initialise. Name: Event Viewer
Extension. CLSID: {394C052E-B830-11D0-986-00C04FD8DBF7}
but the Computer Management MMC does come up. Local Users
has a redX over it and comes up with the message 'Unable
to access the computer XXXX. The error was: Invalid
Syntax.' and most of the MMCs have errors 'Snap in failed
to initialise.'

How can I bring up the Event Log to find out what has
happened?

Winlogon "Shell"="Explorer.exe" is OK

Searching on userinit.exe brings back items dealing with
Terminal Services. We don't have TS running on our server
but have had TS logins appear in the Local Users that we
disabled.

What are your thoughts about fixing this? Will W2000
Repair off the CD be of use? Or should I try to run SPK4?

HI Dave,

The system is our webserver and is used only for
webhosting.

The last action on the server was to upload an SSL
certificate around 12 hours ago with no action since.

I can bring up a CMD window and ping successfully across
the network.

Occasionally the desktop comes up then disappears again.
When it is up I can run explorer but only and empty window
comes up. Similarly trying to access Event Viewer brings
up the window but do events in it.

Clicking on various items in the Computer Management
Console come up with messages like 'Server service not
started.'

Trying to check Services the following error comes
up 'Error 1307: This security ID may not be assigned as
the owner of this object'

Thanks
Jules

I'd guess if you want any hope of saving the server instance you'll probably
need to start a support incident with product support.

Dave

Many thanks: your post fixed my problem that started with a funner.worm infe
ction. McAfee got rid of the files but left me with no desktop and multiple
(c. 190!!) instances of userinit.exe running that took 100% CPU.

When I checked the Registry from your post the "Shell" entry had been modifi
ed to "Shell"="userinit.exe".

Running W2k Professional SP5.

Many thanks - you fixed a load of hassle!

Neil
