SMTP Virtual Server Failing to Start

I recently joined a company that has been having problems with their virtual
SMTP server not starting. Emails sent via ASP files on our website enter the
Pickup folder but fail to be sent to their destinations. When I attempt to
start the virtual server I get the following error message:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

As I am quite new to IIS any help someone can provide would be very welcome.

I have the same problem only started AFAIK last week.
There are no entries in system log at all concerning SMTP
I tried uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling, same error
I have noticed that the mailroot folder which used to be under inetpub has
moved to being under wwwroot .
I downloaded metaedit but I do not know how the settings should be setup

Wayne

Has anyone found a solution to this problem. I am experiencing the same
problem. When I reboot my server IIS fails to start. SMTP is also failing to
start.

Are you using a AntiSPAM Software which might hook to the eventsinks?
If yes uninstall it and try again.

I have no antispam on this box as it is a www hosting server and I was using
the IIS SMTP only for sending from domains on the server
I do have the jmail component but it's been installed for years.
I think somehow port 25 is blocked for incoming.
I can use the cdosys component to send from an ASP page to port 25 to my
mail server

So I've posted some example scripts and the people will have to change to
cdosys or jmail
