I believe this has been asked before, but either I don't understand the
answer or the options I've read don't apply to me. While I was ABLE TO
PUBLISH PREVIOUSLY(most recently in July), I have not been able to publish
since (I think) we installed the SP Service Pack. Thus far, my host has not
been able to figure out the problem. I am repeatedly asked for my username
and password and told my site doesn't exist.

I did read that the Service Pack firewall may be the problem (Article
883607) - but the firewall has been turned off because we use ZoneAlarm.
When we turned off Zone Alarm, (and rebooted) we still couldn't publish.

Here is the exact sequence of events that happens over and over and over
........

~ Open FrontPage web
~ Click: "File, Publish Web"
~ Dialog: "Connect to <my site>" displays
~ Enter: User name and password
~ Click: OK
~ Dialog: "Connect to <my site>" displays again
~ Keeps displaying as long as I reenter the User Name, Password, OK
~ Click: "Cancel"
~ Dialog: "Publish Destination" displays
~ Publish destination defaults to : <my site>
~ Click: "OK"
~ Dialog: "Connect to <my site>" displays again
~ Same results as above when enter Username and Password
~ Click: "Cancel"
~ Microsoft FrontPage dialog displays: " A web does not exist at <my site>.
Would you like FrontPage to create a web at that location?" (Note: The web
does exist - I and many others access it daily.)
~ If I cancel, takes me back to Publish Destination dialog, as above
~ If I check "OK," get the Microsoft FrontPage message: "Unable to open "<my
site>. Possible causes:
1. The Web server may not have the FrontPage server extensions intalled
2. The Web server may be temporarily out of service.
3. If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be
incorrect.
4. An error may have occured in the web server."
~ Click: "OK"
~ "Publish Destination" dialog appears again, as above. Aaaargh!

It's been two weeks and have not been able to publish to my site - which
desperately needs an update.

Any help (in fairly simple language) would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

Are the appropriate rights (read/write) on the server still OK?

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the authentication
methodology. In my case, the symptoms were that FP 2003 would insist that FP
Server Extensions 2002 were not installed on my W2k3 server. I host my own
web server so I can get directly at everything I needed to.

Open the IIS Manager.
Right click on 'Default Web Site'
Select Properties
This brings up the properties dialog.
Click on Directory Security
Click on the Authentication and access control group's Edit button.
Enable anonymous access should be enabled if you wish for anyone to read
your web site.
Basic authentication (password is sent in clear text) should be enabled if
you want to provide access to FP via a network authentication logon box.
