Richard Stallman (GNU, FSF, gcc, MIT AI Lab) and others did not at all
like the license I invented for cLIeNUX, my end-user oriented Linux
distro. I'm using the text console core of cLIeNUX now, but nobody else
is. The idea was use GNU and other copylefted works as a basis for a
distro including works not so "free" as Stallman defines it. Here is a
typical cLIeNUX release, from /configure/inittab...

## an intact entire cLIeNUX Core.

There's a lot of original material by myself under those terms in cLIeNUX.
The inittab in question, for example, is much simpler than the usual "sysv
init" and so on.

I still like the cLIeNUX business model idea, but one guy couldn't make it
happen. One problem is the complexity of the idea, which is off-putting.
It is similar to the GNU GPL or Kerry's Iraq position in that regard.
Well, when I post this message that's no longer the case. PD.

There is a large mass of GUI (X Windows) stuff with cLIeNUX as well,
including a nice ctwm config, but I don't use the GUI any more. I felt the
text core was what I should concentrate on as the prime maintainer.

A text console unix (Linux) is still better than most of what else has
come down the pike. THere is a LOT of stuff in cLIeNUX that I believe can
enhance end-user unix. man C and man programming, for example.
Documentation I wrote. and this introduction to the ed editor. This is the
man ed html top page in cLIeNUX< now public domain...

ed, UNIX Programmer's Manual, 1971
man ed, 1994
cLIeNUX 1998 ed tips
"Call me Ishmael."
Moby Dick

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."
A Tale of Two Cities

"ed is the standard text editor."
UNIX Programmer's Manual, 1971

cLIeNUX ed has some extra user-feedback over GNU ed, which ain't much,
but beats a zero. Error messages are more verbose, a bit more
error-specific, and there is an L command to print a short command
reminder message. cLIeNUX ed is also defaulted differently. cLIeNUX ed
starts with an ed>> prompt, and the -H text error report switch is on
by default.
