Yah, hey dere, Lars!
I'm a newbie to Debian, too - but, I hung around long enough at the Knoppix
forum long enough to learn a few things before switching over to try Woody.
(v3.0 r2) So, even though I'm far, far from expert, I can help you with a
couple of things.
Re. Knoppix vs. Debian: Knoppix IS Debian - a variety of it. The v3.0 r2 is
another variety; the mainstream variant, if you will, that's usually
referred to as "Woody". Knoppix is basically experimental, and Woody is
basically stable and thoroughly tested. Knoppix gives you a bunch of extras
that Woody hasn't included because those extras haven't passed the rigorous
testing process (yet). If you do a HD install of Knoppix, you end up with a
vanilla Debian flavored by amounts of Knoppix extras that vary depending on
which method you used and options you picked to install onto HD.
Yes, you can install Knoppix to HD. There are several ways of doing it, in
fact. I did it at least 3 times, slightly different each time - but, never
could work out the bugs enough to consider the OS stable enough to rely on
for daily use.
The best advice I can give you re Knoppix, is to go to
http://www.knoppix.next , and read, read, read. Then, read some more. When
you've hit your limit or have read it all, then go to
http://www.knoppix.net/forum/ and follow the links to read, read, read some
more.
Good luck!
