Hello All,
Since early this week, one of my pages has been timing out on the
SaveAsOrder call.
This is a page/site that has been up and running for nearly a year.
Now, whenever the code comes to the SaveAsOrder function, I am getting
the following error:
"Connection to the transaction manager failed"
The screen dump contains the following error code: (0x8004d01c)
On the server I get these ApplicationLog entries:
EventId: 16260
EventId: 16261
EventId: 16262
My webserver and database server are two machines on a single cluster.
I can ping each node from the other by name and/or IP address.
How do I troubleshoot this issue?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you for using Microsoft Newsgroups.
Check that MSDTC is running successfully, you can check if the service is
running and that you can ping the servers both ways with netbios and ip
address. You can also use a utility called DTCPing to make sure there are
no issues between the server. Please refer to kb article Q306843 How To
Troubleshoot MS DTC Firewall Issues
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=306843.
If there is a firewall between the web server and the SQL server, make sure
that no ports have been shut down before it stopped working.

Thanks for the information. I will troubleshoot with the utility you
mentioned.
But I am confused as to why all other features of the site seem to
work (user pofile changes, adding items to the basket, etc). The only
call that fails is SaveAsOrder.
What is different about SaveAsOrder, as compared to MyBasket.Save() ?
Thanks for the help thus far.

OK. I ran the tests and had one error (the test results are below).
There is only two suspicious items:
ERROR: "WARNING:the CID values for both test machines are the same
while this problem won't stop DTCping test, MSDTC will fail for this"
Since both of the machines are on the same cluster, I don't know if
the error is significant or not. I looked at the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CID
on both machines in the cluster and ALL the keys are the same. This is
correct for a cluster... Isn't it??
ERROR: "Cluster Environment detected
10-08, 13:54:25.753-->Invalid IP Address:X.X.237.203 "
I can ping the X.X.237.203 by name and IP from both nodes. So I know
the IPs are correct. I don't know why this is failing here.
Regardless, a simple test page that I've created that simply calls
SaveAsOrder on my basket still fails.
Any ideas on what may be wrong? I'm pretty stumped on this one.

Hello Thomas,
As you mentioned that your web server and sql server are=20
on different nodes of the same cluster you'd have a=20
problem with the DTC because in a cluster involving SQL,=20
the DTC is a single resource that is started on the node=20
which has ownership of the resource group. You might want=20
to add the DTC resource to the resource group that has=20
the IIS under failover ensuring that the site always can=20
connect to this. SQL anyways seems to understand where=20
the DTC is able to route connections through it.
Hope this helps.
I'm right now stuck in trying to set SQL installed on a=20
Win2K3 cluster because there is no SQL SP2 slipstreamed=20
media available )))

Thank you for using Microsoft Newsgroups.
In regards to your question on SaveAsOrder,
"During the checkout phase of a Commerce Server 2002 Web site, a Microsoft
Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) transaction is used
to save the order to the database. This operation is performed by an MSDTC
transaction that uses remote procedure call (RPC) communications to connect
to the Commerce database to save the orderform."
For the complete article information that applies Windows 2000, see kb
article Q820987 BUG: Hotfix Q331953 breaks MSDTC functionality for Commerce
Server 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=820987. The other Commerce
Features do not use transactions.
With that MSDTC must be working without any errors for SaveAsOrder to work.
Now in regards to the error you get using DTCPING, "the CID values for
both test machines are the same". This is where it gets tricky. For two
reasons, MSDTC is supported by a different group and I know the basics of
how MSDTC must work in order for Commerce Server to work properly. Second,
I am not sure I understand what you mean by all the machines are on the
same cluster. Do you mean same network but different machines? One web
server and one database server.
As kb article Q306842 mentions
"If DTCPing returns an error message similar to the following:
Unexpected: My session guid is same as partner's guid
check whether the current server has been duplicated or cloned from the
other server. If so, locate the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CID key in the registry.
Under this key, you may notice more than one GUID. Locate the GUID whose
underlying Description key is MSDTC. Note that this GUID is also listed in
the DTCPing output window. If the other server has a GUID that is exactly
the same for MS DTC in its registry, you must create a new GUID for MS DTC
in one of the registries. You can use GuidGen to do this.
After you add this new GUID, and also all of its underlying keys to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CID, make sure to delete the old GUID that it is
replacing.
If this step resolves your problem, it is highly recommended that you read
the following article to learn more about duplicating (or "ghosting")
computers: 162001 Do Not Disk Duplicate Installed Versions of Windows"
Were the machine ghosted or can you tell how then end up with the same
GUID.
From a previous case I worked, generating a new GUID using GUIDGEN and
changing it in one of the servers fixed the issue. I download a GUIDGEN
tool but I am not a 100% comfortable telling you that is the tool to use
but it looks correct,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...1F58-484F-4A8C-
BB39-ADB270833AFC&displaylang=en. In the previous case, I mentioned. I
collaborated with the MSDTC support professional to fix that portion of the
issue.
I would recommend that depending on how critical your environment is for
you. You can try to download the GUIDGEN tool, generate a GUID and modify
it in one of the servers. Then run DTCPing again to make sure you no
longer get the error. If the environment is extremely critical and you
cannot afford a mistake then you can either post the error to the MSDTC
newsgroup and get the correct download and version of the GUIDGEN tool.
You can also open a support incident to get MSDTC working properly.
I hope you find the information so far useful. At this point, I would like
for you to make the decision to keep troubleshooting via the newsgroup or
an incident to get the right group involved. It depends on whether your
system is development, staging or production.

Maria,
This Win2K machine has SP4 installed, so the Q331953 hotfix is not
installed.
My only concern is that the web server and sql server are two nodes on
a single cluster (unfortunately, I'm not a "networking" guy... I'm
barely a "software" guy! <g> ).
According to our IT manager, since both the IIS and SQL machine are in
the same cluster, they will have a shared registry, including the
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CID keys. Thus, both sides will have the same GUIDs.
As I mentioned, this setup has been in production since last November
and has worked as flawlessly as my code has allowed. We have a power
outage last weekend that lasted longer than our UPS (8 hours +).
However, we've rebooted the servers in the past without any problems,
so I'm stumped as to why we would have a problem now.
I suspect that I will create an support incident with MS. We don't do
a lot of traffic on our site, and we are not losing sales (SaveAsOrder
comes after the purchasing/ shiping logic and is distinct from those
operations). But we are failing to convert the customers baskets to
orders. In our system, that is not critical, but will need to be
addressed once we get the problem figured out.
I will post the resolution to my problem, once it's in place.
Again, thanks for your help in this matter.

Thank you for using Microsoft Newsgroups.
If you can wait and since I am very curious to figure out the solution, I
will do some more research next Thursday. I will try to get you more
information. Please do not wait if it is urgent because I am not sure I
can get you a full answer on Thursday. Especially since I am not totally
cleared on how the two servers are clustered.
Can you elaborate on " the web server and sql server are two nodes on a
single cluster"? Are the servers clustered using Microsoft Cluster Server?
We usually recommend clustering the SQL server and Network Load Balance
the web servers. What resources are clustered?
What I understand of MS Cluster and MSDTC, the CID have to be differnet on
each server. With the power failure and at the time of the fail over
strange things can happen to the registry.
Anyway, let me know or open the support incident. But in any case, go
ahead and post the answer.

OK, the issue was a bad entry in the DNS server.
I'm sorry for my inadequate description of our cluster condifuration,
but I've never had to play with MS networking and I don't understand
it fully. Here's what I understand of our setup, but I may off in some
areas.
We have a MS Cluster that has two machines. Node 1 is the web server
and Node 2 is the SQL server. Both machines have the same CID, since
the registry is a shared resource (??).
After reviewing the log that I posted I saw one line that I had
overlooked before.
========= SNIPET ===============
++++++++++++hosts ++++++++++++
127.0.0.1 localhost
Cluster Environment detected
10-08, 13:54:25.753-->Invalid IP Address:X.X.237.203
(Mask:255.255.255.240) (35)
MSDTC Virtual Name:USWEBCLUSTER, IP: "
===== END OF SNIPPET ==============
So I went to each node ant tried to ping "USWEBCLUSTER".
Node2 suceeded, but Node1 failed. Our IT manager noticed that Node2
and Node 1 were pinging different IP addresses when trying to reach
USWEBCLUSTER.
He quickly found an erroneous entry in the DNS server. He made the
correction, flushed the DNS cache from node1 and Viola! Node1 was now
able to ping USWEBCLUSTER.
I then loaded a test page that did nothing but save my basket to an
order, and the page worked as designed. The timeout problems were
gone, and the log indicated success. I'll be monitoring the system
over the next couple of days to make sure nothing else is amiss.
Thanks for your help and intrducing me to DTCPing.

Thank you for using Microsoft Newsgroups.
I am glad it is all working and thanks for elaboration on your environment.
The more info we have the easier it is to see the whole picture when
troubleshooting via the newsgroup. Thanks,
