Ok, here are my thoughts:
1) There is a poll at http://www.slackcare.com, so you can vote. SlackCare
isn't directly affiliated with Slackware that I know of.

2) If Gnome was such an issue,

a) by now, if Pat had been talking to developers on this, it would've been
fixed, if the developers are paying attention.

b) Pat would've asked the Dropline people for help as to what they do
differently.

c) Pat would've asked SOMEONE for help, but as it is it seems Pat does
everything on his own. I love Slackware and I trust Pat, but somehow he
seems to not want anyone to help. I'm hoping someone doesn't "borrow"
the .slackBuild scripts and make a spinoff of Slackware that is somehow
better, etc.

3) However, I emailed Pat as well and asked if it were true, and he pointed
me back a link: http://www.dropline.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3430

4) I hope we don't lose Gnome, or at least, GTK. There are many Gnome/GTK
apps that many of us don't want to be without, such as Gaim (because Kopete
isn't as good as GAIM yet....), XChat (because Konversation isn't totally
up to speed yet, but is close, and because Ksirc absolutely sucks),
Mozilla / Mozilla-based browsers (because I was told they use GTK but I'm
not sure), and The GIMP (because there's quite frankly nothing even close
to GIMP for Linux, yet), and because I also like XFCE quite a bit.

My personal view is that we shouldn't remove Gnome. Instead, we should give
Gnome as much negative publicity as we possibly can to get them to fix
their problems.

Even then, however, I think it would only be fair to do an interview with
Dropline, Mandrake, and Debian and ask their Gnome people if they, too,
have had such problems, or if not, etc.

So take this however you want, but realize that it's my opinion. Gnome as a
desktop isn't bad at all, but I'm not the one building it. Even then,
honestly, others using Slackware have built Gnome 2.8 themselves
(non-Dropline), which makes me question the "gnome is difficult" idea.
Still, hopefully someone mentions this to the Gnome people, etc....

If you're just now seeing this post, please respond. I'm more inclined to
think that this is a Gnome issue, not necessarily something that is
Slackware-specific.
