CD and DVD burning can only be done as root, and even then you may run
into trouble using the 2.6.8 kernel or later.
I suggest you use a kernel up to 2.6.7 in order to keep burning using
cdrecord or K3b.
Until this big problem is solved (if ever, so keep asking them!) stick
to the older kernels.

I have this problem as well. I can burn with k3b logged on as root but not
in my own password.
(kernel 2.6.8-1.521) works fine with 2.6.5-1.358. Why is this - anyone
know?
