I'm interested in Ghost 9, but having never used such imaging
software, I have a naive question. If I have a 120 gig hard drive with
30 gigs used, can I use an 80 gig drive as a backup device? In other
words, is the image made of the entire 120 gig drive -- such that 80
gigs would be a third smaller than the 120 gig drive -- or is an image
made of only the used space on the drive -- such that I'd have plenty
of room to do my imaging? Thanks for any help... and please email
reply as well.

Stay well clear of Norton Ghost 9. Installing it crashed my
(straightforward) PC good and proper.
V9 seems to be no better than the older versions, in my view worse.
See http://www.alanluber.com/pcfearfact...g2003review.htm
for some of the gruesome details about its predecessors.

I disagree. The url review you showed is for Ghost 2003. Ghost 9 is
NOT the next version of Ghost 2003.

Ghost 9 is actually an upgraded version of Drive Image which Symantec
bought. It is a very good product in my opinion. I've used Drive
Image for years, and now Ghost 9.

and yes Ghost just back's up the used portion of the partition. There
is also compression options which can further reduce the size of the
image. It also supports external USB drives, and disaster recovery is
from a bootable CD.
