Hello. On July 17th of this year I was on vacation some 10 hours away from
home when I received a phone from a friend telling me that the police had
kicked in my door and were searching my house.
Allow me to provide you with a little background on this subject. I was
living in a small community of about 2000 people. I have always had a job. I
didn't cause trouble. I went to work. I came home. That was my life. One day
this spring while home on my lunch break there was a knock on the door. When
I answered it, there was the local preacher. He was there to invite me to
join the neighborhood watch program he was heading up. After declining his
invitation he informed me that that was ok because I had been identified as
a problem to the community anyway. I promptly told the man that he should
turn around and get the XXXX off my porch and never return. This made me
understandably angry. I had always considered myself as an asset to that
community. So I sent him a letter telling him that I wanted nothing to do
with him, his opinion of me did not concern me and that he could have me
watched all he wanted, he wouldn't be able to catch me doing anything wrong.
Apparently he didn't like someone standing up his bullying because he
promptly responded by writing me a letter telling ,me that I would be
watched more than ever and that he knew that I was on drugs. Then came the
rumors. I started hearing that he was telling people that he knew for a FACT
that I sold drugs to kids. He couldn't know this for a fact because it
wasn't a fact.
To many of you, myself included, this may sound like defamation of character
and slander. You may even think that I could sue the man. Try getting any of
the so called good Christians that he said these things to, to admit it in
court though.
In the spirit of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth I responded in
turn. Here begins my mistake. I responded in electronic form. I sent him an
email saying that I had heard that he had a thing for the boys in his
congregation, he had an alcoholic for a wife, yada yada yada. Maybe it was a
bit immature but so was what he was doing and I was sending this to him not
telling the entire community these lies.
On July 17th the police searched my home with a search warrant saying that
the probable cause was that I had sent the man harassing email. Did it take
a search warrant to associate my ip address to me? No. The manager of my isp
is a member of the good reverends congregation. What did they take out of my
house? Two computers that I had never had connected to the internet. My main
computer, the one I sent the email in question with just happened to be a
laptop and just happened to be my map for the vacation I was on. The day
after my house was raided an article was printed in the local paper, front
page no less, saying basically that they had the evidence that I was sending
obscene emails and that as soon as lab results got back I would be arrested.
This cost me my job. this cost me my home. I had to sell a car that I
rebuilt from the ground up and was my pride and joy. I have never returned
to that town. The only things I got from my house were the irreplaceable
things that I had friends get for me. To this day they have never issued a
warrant for my arrest. They wanted me, my unpopular beliefs and opinions the
XXXX out of their town and that's just what they got.
I now understand the value and need for something called a remailer. I am
hoping that someone will respond to this post with information as to what I
need to be looking for in a remailer and maybe point me in the right
directions.
To some this post may seem to be a bit of a rant, but maybe it's a prime
example of how our constitutional rights are being trampled right before our
eyes.
