Is it possible to have more than one listing on DMOZ for the same URL? I
have one listing in DMOZ. There are numerous categories that I would have
liked to be listed in.

But just to check, it's not recommended that I try to list in more than one
category with the same URL if I want to remain legit in the eyes of ODP,
right? (another of my newbie questions)

Dmoz is pretty much just a big piece o' crap... I wouldn't worry about how
many times you apply as long as you can squeak in there somewhere (so that
you can appear on all those directory sites out there that use Dmoz for
their source)

Whenever you apply to any category, the breakdown is probably something
like:
60% - Chance you'll find a group with no editor
39% - Chance you'll have a lazy editor who never adds anybody or does so
only once every 8-10 months
0.2% - Chance you'll have an editor who has a competing site and won't add
you because of that
0.6% - Chance you'll have your application reviewed and rejected for no
apparent reason
0.2% - Chance you'll be accepted!

That adds up to 100%... which coincidently enough is the chance your
application will be rejected if you apply to be an editor

So you might not want to apply to 1 category 100 times... but you probably
want to apply to 100 categories atleast 1 time

My site has been in the major directories for years. Would there be any
value in submitting to some of the more obscure directories from a SERP
point of view?

Also, if the homepage is in all the major directories, is there any value in
submitting sub-pages that deal with different topics?

Thanks,

Bob

Well the big thing with directories, including DMOZ, is the backlinks they
provide you

Some, like the DMOZ directory, are used by other websites... so getting into
DMOZ might have your site appear on dozens or hundreds of websites with a
decent page rank

It might seem like alot of work, researching all the different directories
that you can submit to, but its often something you only have to do once...

IE: lets say you have a website selling dodads in Anytown, Anystate USA...
so you go out and search for all the sites you can that deal with selling
dodads... and then don't just submit to them and move on... create a
database, spreadsheet or even just a text file and keep a copy of the URL.
Then go and find all the directories for your city: Anytown... and do the
same: submit to them and then keep a listing of all sites... and the same
for your state: Anystate...

So you might end up having to put in a few hours for this, but once you are
done you should have a pretty extensive list that you can come back to in
the future when you need to make changes or add new sites (if you do web
design you should probably come up with a list of all the 'generic' sites
you can submit any of your clients sites to when they're done)

And don't just dismiss them based on where they are now... say you find 10
sites that are PR0. Some will think "Eh, why should I bother to waste my
time with a PR0 website..." but its a directory, so odds are you are going
to submit your link and leave it there for a few years without having to
come back to it... and who knows where the site will be in 1, 2, 3, 5, etc
years (it might be gone, it might still be PR0, it might be PR6 or 7...)

Definitely.

The benefit would be more inbound links to your web sites.

Start with this list here:

That's a bit more difficult. It seems obvious to me that 100 links
from Site A to Site B is not 100 times better than 1 link from Site A
to Site B. However, perhaps 2 links is 1.25 times better?

Or perhaps the anchor text angle is more important?

Hrmm... I want a look at the Google source code...

Thanks for the list Will.

I have a home page plus three sub pages that are primary landing pages, each
dealing with a different topic and all internally linked. My home page is in
all the major indexes and I rank in the top 10 for most of my keywords in
Google and Yahoo. The directories all list the home page.

I can see value in getting listed in several of the more obscure directories
that are shown in the list and will do that.

But, if the home page is already in a given directory, does it make sense to
submit the other three sub pages dealing with different and specific topics?
Also, I get requests from new directories asking to exchange links. I always
turn these down - not wanting to list them on my professional site. Does
that make sense to do?

Thanks Will,

Bob
