Well the big thing with directories, including DMOZ, is the backlinks they
provide you
Some, like the DMOZ directory, are used by other websites... so getting into
DMOZ might have your site appear on dozens or hundreds of websites with a
decent page rank
It might seem like alot of work, researching all the different directories
that you can submit to, but its often something you only have to do once...
IE: lets say you have a website selling dodads in Anytown, Anystate USA...
so you go out and search for all the sites you can that deal with selling
dodads... and then don't just submit to them and move on... create a
database, spreadsheet or even just a text file and keep a copy of the URL.
Then go and find all the directories for your city: Anytown... and do the
same: submit to them and then keep a listing of all sites... and the same
for your state: Anystate...
So you might end up having to put in a few hours for this, but once you are
done you should have a pretty extensive list that you can come back to in
the future when you need to make changes or add new sites (if you do web
design you should probably come up with a list of all the 'generic' sites
you can submit any of your clients sites to when they're done)
And don't just dismiss them based on where they are now... say you find 10
sites that are PR0. Some will think "Eh, why should I bother to waste my
time with a PR0 website..." but its a directory, so odds are you are going
to submit your link and leave it there for a few years without having to
come back to it... and who knows where the site will be in 1, 2, 3, 5, etc
years (it might be gone, it might still be PR0, it might be PR6 or 7...)
