Karin,
I am in the process of setting up my home network as well. Win2k is the comp
uter that is directly hooked up to the router and WinXP home is a wireless c
onnection. You have to have the user (their login name) set up as a user on
your Win2K machine.
Go to Control Panel/admin tools/computer management/local users groups... ri
ght click on users and select new user. Set up user name the same as the log
in on the XP machine. Set a password of your choice, set password to never e
xpire.
Reboot both machines and see if you can not gain access to your win2000 mach
ine by using the user name and password you set up.
I have my XP machine sharing my shared directors and a printer is shared and
even installed on the xp machine. My problem is that I can not see the XP m
achine on my Win2K machine. I can not even find it if I search for it. Both
machines are on the same network. I have checked the XP and it has a firewal
l running but when I did the wizard it said that it had set up the firewall
for network file sharing and printer sharing. Where do I go from here. My ma
in goal was to have the XP share my files in the Win2k but would like to hav
e it work both ways.
Any suggestions Anyone??????

Thank you for your response, I will try this during lunch. I was also tryin
g
to map a network drive on the XP (home version btw) laptop but couldn't ever
get past the user id and password.....my choice was to use their hotmail.com
account and password which was not successful or something I type in, which
I
have no idea what that would be.
I'm thinking of getting an upgrade of Windows XP pro and then not having to
deal with this problem....but if I can save $90 I would like to!!!
