Dear admins

I am having a problem with my network, to which the solution is I
believe most likely a simple one.

The Scenario
We are altering our backup procedure from local DDS tapes, to a CDRW
on the network.  The box with the CDRW is XP, and up until now has ben
kept off the network.  The server is DEC AlphaServer 1200 running
Tru64 v5.1A. The network is a mixed network as we have some old gear,
but suffice to say the speed is 10Mbs/s

The Problem
It seems that XP is all OK to access the network, I have not yet set
up samba on the Alpha, but the problem I am having is I think with the
routing tables on UNIX.

From XP I can ping all nodes on the network, including the Alpha, from
the Alpha I can ping all nodes on the network apart from the XP box.
I have tried adding static routes to the host, I have tried changing
the default gateway on the Alpha to the local adaptor (only for
testing), however I am still unable to ping the XP box. The routing
table does show that the packets are being sent to the XP box, but
when I try to ping I get

----192.7.100.201 PING Statistics----
n packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

I have now deleted all the routes apart from the original network
route, the default route, and the local loopback.

I am out of ideas.

ANY suggestions would be much appreciated.

The problem is likely to be with the XP box.  If you have the Internet
Connection Firewall turned on it may be set to block ICMP packets.
Under the advanced settings for the IFC you should find the option to
allow incoming ICMP packets.

If you can ping the unix server from the XP box, it is not a routing
problem. Because, if it were a routing problem, the alpha server wouldn't
know how to transmit the answers.

The problem is certainly with the XP box not answering the ICMP echo
requests. Look at the integrated firewall configuration on XP. And look at
the firewall log file. There you should see the requests coming from the
alpha and dropped by the XP box.

'Just interjecting my two cents.  I am not particularly sure of this,
but MS has been known to break standards in the past.  It would make
sense for them to reel against the ICMP ping response... what useful
purpose does it prove to your average Microsoft Office monkey, anyway?
They need their pornographic spam popping up for them, but there's no
need for network diagnostics.

What I'm saying is, are you double sure that XP will even respond to pings?
