433au workstation SRM console access. |
 |

Sounds stupid but I am trying to access the SRM console on a 433au.
Beyond ripping out the HD(Im assuming this will work) I have been
unable to find a consistent method by which one can force the
machine to boot to that console. I have tried Cntrl-P and Cntrl-C
methods. Cntrl-C worked once and for the life of me it will not
work again. The alpha stations I normally work with have a hardware
halt button. This I presume does not exist on the personal
workstations or if it does it is internal such as a jumper on the
mobo. I have searched for approximately 3 hours now with no luck
beyond more cntrl-p and cntrl-c posts. Anyone out there know the
proper method of forcing a boot to the SRM console on the Alpha
Personal Workstation 433au?
Thanks.

Shutdown the machine with shutdown -h now (assuming Tru64 UNIX)
On the SRM (I have Alpha Servers, not workstations. I don't know if
there is a difference):

Unfortunately I forgot to mention. I do not have root access to this
machine. If I had simply halting would be easy. The entire reason I
need to get to the console is to recover the root password. =)
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Well the situation is even worse. Not only is root via the OS
inaccessible but the password at the SRM console has been changed.
I have attempted to remove the battery with no luck. A quick glance
at the mobo I noticed a "unlock" set of jumpers.
Anyone have specs on this mobo that indicate how to clear the SRM
console password as well?
Thanks.

There is a halt button up near serial port 1 by the DIMM slots.
Small round black button. It does not appear to work to halt the
system though. It performs just as cntrl-c and cntrl-p do and the
boot sequence hangs until you release it. Even after holding it for
upwards of 3 minutes it still never dropped to the SRM console.
I found some spec files at hp.com but cant seem to find any
indiction in these documents as to how to clear the SRM Console
password. I did find mention of going into the console, typing login
pressing halt then rebooting though. Any ideas?
Desperate... lol
Thanks.

Pull to power connector to the disk, and wait from it to all fall down

Yah I figured that would work. I found another method as well.
Unfortunately whoever this machine came from/belonged to before it was in
our hands set the SRM password and I have no clue what it is. This is my
current predicament.
Thanks.

Re flash SRM from CD to clear out the password? Set the CD to the ID of
the normal boot disk and let it do its thing.
