RedHat 9.0, 9.0.93 Beta?, Fedora, What's Going On? |
 |
 |
|
|
01-24-04 12:09 AM
First of all sorry for the cross-post.
I am a long time user of RedHat and I am very happy with it.
I am still using RedHat 7.3 because of the control panel I have on top
of the O/S.
Can someone shed some light on the fact that RH will no longer support
RH 7.x, 8.0 and not even 9.0 starting early next year.
I pay for RH Network approx. $60/year for the up2date feature and keep up
to date with erratas and patches, or download ISO at a priority speed/date.
I was given an email about migrating to RH WS. But I don't know if that'll
work
you see WS is for Work Station and I am running my Email Server, DNS, and
Web
Server all in one machine. Than I have to use the RH ES which is more
money.
Why is RH turning into M$. Let alone free hosting provider or do free
broadcasting
community now I have to fork out major dough while I am loosing colo fees as
we
speak.
I read about Fedora and it will not be supported by RedHat. Who will handle
the RPM updates (e.g. up2date). Fedora is not even listed as an option to
download
from the RHNetwork but front page yes, at about 40k/speed or 6 hr download
vs
the 1.5 hr or less for the other ISOs.
Why is RedHat working on 9.0.93 Beta if they are not supporting 9.0 in near
future;
unless they will take the new beta with a new name.
Personally I think the Open Source people/community using or giving to
Fedora Project
will end up being used by RH. They will grab the best of Fedora and
implement
into their ES, WS, and AS RH as a main feature and make more money on it.
I know there is always an alternative such as FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Debian and
so on.
I personally liked the Interface to RHNetwork and keep my server up 2 date
and keep
track of changes. The Control Panel interface works real well with RH and
no issues
breaking the GUI.
So will Fedora be a good option, will people use it or at least be supported
for
updates and such. I read that the life-time/up cycle for support si 2-3
months,
the RH Enterprise if 5 years.
http://fedora.redhat.com/about/rhel.html
Please post here any feedback opinions and such. There is also talk about
tweaking RH 9.x to make it believe it ES/WS/AS in order to fool up2date and
still
get your UPDATES from RedHat and continue on the subscription yearly.

You would be better off switching to Mandrake if you want a really good
system. Like you I had Redhat 7.3 and all the others after, but nothing was
as good as 7.3 until i went to Mandrake, let alone the support and smooth
system intergration. Best of luck with your choice.

I will defently try Mandrake. I have herd only good things about it.
I just finished downloading Fedora today and I am ready to burn the ISOs
and give it a try. It will take a little tweaking to have it working with
Plesk (PSA)
Control Panel.
Mandrake, Suse, and FreeBSD are already supported. I haven't seen
a GUI of Linux in a very long time, and if I did it's eye-catching but
that's not
what I am used to or work in.
My main concern was the up2date or some sort of Update managed system
at a yearly price/monthly price. Someone suggested http://progeny.com/ as
a solution. They will support 7.x, 8.x, 9.x and such but that's probably
for
1 year. There is also Ximiam, RedCarpet and such that can be used...
I guess I can load 9.0 on the system or try out Mandrake on a test server
and get myself familiar with...
Thanks.

I ran across the site, O/S I would think that there will be more support
towards Fedora vs the WhiteBox.
Here is a quote from another forum in regards to the Whitebox which
I tend to agree with (a little):
quote:
A solid idea I suppose for setting up staging and test
servers, but I doubt the PHB would settle for "White Box
Enterprise Linux" (although I like the Star Trek font) in the
office, and if you're at home, Fedora would probably just
as good and better supported by the community.

Me too.

Yes. Paying customers are meant to use Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
instead, and non-paying customers are meant to use Fedora instead. RHEL is
a better Red Hat Linux than Red Hat Linux if you pay for Red Hat Network.
quote:

Maybe WS meant Workstation in some regards, but it's also meant for simple
servers, cluster servers and other kinds of servers. The difference between
ES and WS is that Red Hat Network doesn't auto-update some server packages
if you install them (like a BGP router), but it doesn't mean you can't
install it. AS and ES contain the same packages - only the level of support
is different.
quote:

No - just stay around with WS.
quote:

Red Hat is a company that needs to make money. If they don't make more money
than the competition, they'll die, and then there's no more Red Hat.
But they do it in a very nice way. If you liked Red Hat Linux, you'll love
RHEL. It doesn't contain all the Micro$oft alike things like product
activation etc., and it is extremely stable, both in regards to server
stability and version stability.
quote:
> I read about Fedora and it will not be supported by RedHat. Who will

It is. But Fedora requires you to use apt-get to keep it up to date, and
there are only security updates 3 months after the next Fedora release -
which happens several times a year. This means that you have to upgrade
your Fedora to the latest version all the time.
quote:
> Why is RedHat working on 9.0.93 Beta if they are not supporting 9.0 in

9.0.93 beta is a predecessor of Fedora Core 1. It was renamed.

I would rephrase this as:
- Give all you can to the community.
- I pay Red Hat to have less work with running my servers. I don't pay them
for software. Remember that the Debian team needed assistance from Red Hat
and SuSE to find out how their Debian servers were hacked... :-)
- Giving something to any commercial company, including Sun, IBM, Red Hat,
SuSE, Mandrake etc. is helping them to earn money. Red Hat is much more
faithful to the Open Source community than SuSE, so if you want to give
something to any of these companies, Red Hat is one of the better ones.
quote:
> I personally liked the Interface to RHNetwork and keep my server up 2 date

In other words - you liked a commercial product from a commercial company.
If you want things like that, you need to pay somebody - otherwise you need
to go with free software. If you want people to work for you, pay them. If
you don't, they won't work for you - they will work for themselves or
somebody else. That's life.
Btw - I'm using RHEL on my personal server and Fedora on my personal
desktop.
Lars.
