I updated my box from RH 5.2 to 9. I see that there is a nice automatic RPM
updater that looks similar to the XP updater. I tried it and I think I
discovered that I have to pay a subscription fee to RH to use the updater.
Is that correct or am I missing something?

TIA

Dave

You can sign for a free demo to the RHN at http://rhn.redhat.com. It is for free, you sometimes have to answer some questions to prolongue the demo period and you only can manage one system with one demo account. An alternative to think about is apt4rpm or yum. Both work with repositories and don't need a subscription. Another point here is that the SSL certificate with the ISO's is out of date you need to update the certificate from the RedHat site https://rhn.redhat.com/help/latest-up2date.pxt before allowing the system to register you to the RHN.

You can answer questions in a survey to get free updates throught the RHN. You will just have to give an email address, and they don't share these email addies with anyone. It's really a nice feature, much better than MicroCrap.

Dave, Skip RH9 and go to Fedora Core 1, up2date is free on that release. Kind regards, Jan Gerrit Kootstra
