I successfully established a VPN connection (VPN status looks good, and I
can connect to the remote router) between a Netgear VPNClient on a LAN with
with workgroup WG1 and a Netgear FVS328 with workgroup WG2 (all computers at
Windows XP). I can only see the local workgroup WG1 from the client. How
do I add the remote workgroup WG2 so that I can see the other computers and
shared folders on the remote workgroup?

Best,
Christopher

Use a WINS server.

Can a Windows XP workstation act as the WINS server?

Christopher

No. You need a server.

Otherwise you must access the remote machines by IP address.

Thaks for the quick response.

OK. Currenlty, the IP addresses are provided by the router, but I'll assign
them so they remain constant (only four workstations on the LAN).

What features are supported via IP addresses without the server. I know IP
addresses will support remote desktop, but can an IP address be used to
access a shared folder without using WINS?

Best,
Christopher

If they're fixed addresses, and small numbers of hosts, you can just add the
m
to LMHOSTS (for NetBIOS) and HOSTS (for regular TCP/IP).. See this
kbase for the correct location and syntax for LMHOSTS.

Start -> Run -> "\\ip.add.res.s" should pop up the available shares on that
IP, regardless of name resolution issues.
