Howdy,

I just got a trial copy of True Image Corporate Desktop 8.

I am running my first image creation (I have been using
Ghost 9 and V2i on a few machines.)

The image is to be written to a remote machine, but here's
my question:

True Image shows 5% progress, with about three hours left,
but nothing is being written to the remote machine at all.
(I will add that if the three hour estimate is close to
accurate TI is radically faster than either of the other two
products. They each took about 7 hours to create and write
the image.)

With Ghost and V2i, the process of writing to the remote box
started immediately upon launching image creation.

Does TI function differently in this regard or am I missing
something? For example, might TI create the entire image
locally and when completed pipe it to the remote system?

How  big is the file system you're trying to back up ?

Is the target disk NTFS, or as an alternative, are you
breaking the image into 4GB chunks for the FAT32 file size limit ?

Look in Tools/Show Logs for some status info. I don't know
offhand if you can look at logs while a backup is running.

Hi Al,

Both the local system and the remote system are NTFS, and
the local is about 13 gig. I selected "Auto" in the size of
file window.

But back to my original question...

Is it possible that TI creates the image on the local box
and when complete, moves it over to the remote system? That
sort of process would explain what I am seeing: Right now,
nothing has been written to the remote system, but the TI
progress bars show 25% complete, and clearly, it is doing
somethin'.

Hello again,

After posting above, I opened the Console, and looked at the
log:

It shows -

Pending Operation 110 Started: "Creating Partition Image."

But, I noticed something else:

When I tried to connect to remote machine the network would
not display any system other than the local system.

As you know, I am running the Trial Version. Is it possible
that it prevents me from writing to a remote system? That
certainly might be the case with a Trial product, but it
would seem that if I tried to do something that was not
available, I would be notified. And, as I said before, it is
clearly doing something...

TI doesn't create a locak image.

Are you running under Windows or dooting the CD ?

If windows, you need workgroup access set up correctly.  If you can't
browse the target machine you've got a problem. Turn off firewalls,
makesure the workgroup name matches, etc.  SP2 may have changed something
I can't think of.

If booting off the CD, ISTR that hitting F1 (I think) during boot displayes
the details of the Linux boot process which can tell  you lots about what
the problem is.

d/l the manual and look for troubleshooting info.

Hi Al,

I suspect that I know what might be happening...

On the remote machine, TI did create a file with the TIB
extension. It currently shows 0KB as it has since the
process started.

I am certain that lots of data are moving over to the remote
machine.

So, my current guess is that unlike Ghost or V2i, TI pipes
the image into some temp file on the destination system, and
when completed over to the proper location.

Might that be possible?

It doesn't. I backup machines have full disks.

It's not unusual to see zero as a target file size  until the OS
closes the file.

Any chance you've got a 10MB ethernet connection ?

You still haven't said how big the filesystem you are trying to
backup.

Well, that would seem to answer my question. That behavior
is different from Ghost and V2i. With those, I could see the
file size growing moment by moment. I will wait until the
process is completed and see what it shows.

If I understand your question correctly, yes, I did.
