Is PPTP from inside NAT possible?

I have a D-Link DI-804HV VPN router, and an Hayes-Zoom X3 ADSL
router/ADSL modem.

What I would like to do is use the 804HV to terminate PPTP connections
coming from other Windows clients on the Internet (using the Windows
2000/XP capability to create VPN tunnels from the network settings dialogs).

I believe the conventional thing to do would be to set the X3 in bridge
mode, and then let the 804HV do receive all the traffic from the X3.

For various reasons, partly to allow ease of testing of the set up, I
have tried keep the X3 in router mode, setting the 804HV with a 10.*
(static address, not DHCP) address, and designating the 804HV as a
virtual server on the X3, receiving all traffic for ports 1723 and 500.

At present, the remote site seems to be able to make an initial
connection on port 1723, but is unable to log on to the VPN, but returns
an error 678 - "No answer".

Is the configuration I am trying to achieve doable, or am I asking the
impossible?

With thanks,

George.
