Windows 2000 SMTP missing in IIS Console tree

I am running Windows 2000 Pro SP4. I am trying to install SMTP service so I
can drop email into the pickup folder and have it sent off. I have read many
posts relating to this problem and tried all(?) of the suggested fixes with
no luck.
1. File and Print sharing are installed and running.
2. SMTP service is installed and running.
I have uninstalled and installed SMTP, File and Printer sharing, IIS
altogether several times to no avail.
When I install IIS I get two errors in the System event log. They are:
1. Source: smtpsvc
Description: Virtual server 1 was unable to register itself and the local
delivery sink with the event binding database. Server events and local
delivery will not function properly for this virtual server.

2. Source: smtpsvc
Description: Server events initialization failed for virtual server 1.
Server events may not be called for this virtual server.

When I uninstalled IIS I rebooted, deleted everything from
c:\winnt\systems32\inetsrv before re-installing IIS.
I have also tried to register inetmgr.dll and smtpsnap.dll manually.
inetmgr.dll registers fine but smtpsnap.dll fails with the message:
DllRegisterServer in smtpsnap.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070073.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I uninstalled/reinstalled that several times to no avail. I had read that
article as it seems to be the number one reply to previous posts of this
type. I am thinking more along the lines of an unsuccessful install of EVC
4.0 (with Platform Manager) for Windows CE may have caused some problems. I
cleaned up all traces of it from my disk and registry and it eliminated one
error I was having in the Event Log. I have been trying to research the two
remaining errors in my Event Log because they seem to be the reason the
Virtual Server is not starting. I haven't had much luck and I was away at a
show yesterday. Any thoughts on the Event Log errors?

Thanks.

Nope, nothing to do with EVC!

Presumably SP4 is akin to server2003 which has exactly the same problem.
If your in any doubt as to the inferiority, simply look at the help file for
relaying where it tells you how to prevent relaying by allowing annonymous
access!!

Ive ditched 2003 in favour of XP and now run MailEnable and Abyss, which are
just great for my simple needs of vitual hosting and POP-redirection,
catchall and so on.

Unfortunately I am doing this for customers that may have Win2000 as well as
XP. It just seems to be something that is messed up on my machine. A
co-worker was able to install and setup SMTP on his Win 2000 machine.
