Hi all,

I am a newbie to Debian (specifically) and Linux (in general) but have
worked with SuSe (dim distant past) and RH9 (recently)
I have decided for a number of reasons to move to Debian ans as a first
step, wish to do a test intallation on an old Dell 'Optiplex' GX1.

Linux:
Chosen Version = 'Woody'

Hardware:
MM   = enough!
Disk = 7+gB IDE
NIC  = ethernet (unknown manufacture/type)
CPU = pentium something or other 350mHz.
Mouse/Keyboard Logitech(Wireless)
Monitor 19" ADI MicroScan G910
Mouse/keyboard/monitor are shared via a KVM switcher(electronic *not*
contact!) - socket types are PS/2, Sub-D,

Problem(s):
compared with a RH install almost nothing has been recognised, neither
mouse nor NIC can be configured to function, and, although I configured
the NIC - IP:fixed, Gateway & DNS IPs given, Domain ('WORKGROUP' the PC
should function in my Peer2Peer network!) - there is no connection to
the local or Internet (last provided through the Gateway)

.... and 'yes' I've RTFM! but have not been able to suss out my mistake(s)

This *is* much more complex than the RH (or even the Fedora) install,
but I shall prevail with your good will and assistance ... :-)

I would be very grateful for any pointers/assistance from the members of
this group.

David.

ps:
One thing that turned me off RH was the extremely elitaire and
condecending attitudes to newbies in the NGs - I hope that I will feel a
little more comfortable / less like an idiot, here!

Debian installation with the net-installer-rc2
http://osnews.com/story.php?news_id=9271

this is the easiest way to do it, and install a kernel that will
recognize everything you got, Woody is for servers.

regards
