two computers, CALADAN and arrakis, are connected via a hub and
standard RJ45 ethernet cable. arrakis provides internet access via the
Linksys Wireless-B USB Network Adapter v4.0, which connects wirelessly
to an 802.11b router upstairs, with the landlord. Caladan and arrakis
are just a few feet apart.

arrakis has IP routing enabled, and the pings indicated there's a
physical connection between the arrakis and caladan.

"1. Make sure you have correct IP range.
2. Make sure the Subnet Mask is the same of the router.
3. Make sure you have correct default gateway.
4. Make sure you have correct DNS.
5. Make sure no filtering in the router to block the Internet access."

<http://howtonetworking.com/Internet...netaccessa3.htm>

but they don't specify the correct IP range, nor is it clear to me
whether the
Subnet Mask is correct, should caladan match arrakis? since arrakis
connects to the internet fine, I suppose only caladan needs tweaking to
get internet access.

You should manually configure TCP/IP on both Caladan and arrakis (Local Area
Connection 2) - you can use the existing IP addresses and the 255.255.0.0
subnet mask. On Caladan only set the Default gateway to 169.254.252.42 and
the Primary DNS Server to 192.168.2.1. This will enable Caladan to send
packets through arrakis to the router. However, this will not enable
Caladan to receive packets from the Internet unless the Landlord's router
has a static route telling it to send packets destined for the 169.254.x.x
network to 192.168.2.150.

If you are unable to configure a static route on the Landlord's router, try:

1. set Caladan and arrakis to obtain an address automatically as presently
configured.

2. On arrakis in the Properties for Local Area Connection 6, click the
Sharing tab and check the box to enable Internet Connection Sharing.

You should setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on ARRAKIS

With this setup, you should be running ICS (Internet Connection
Sharing) on arrakis to provide the IP settings to Caladan via DHCP. As
it is, Caladan and the Lan connection on arrakis cannot see a DHCP
server and settle on a default IP address which does not include other
settings (such as default gateway) needed to communicate through to the
internet.
