Has anyone tried the new ipod shuffle? How's it seen by linux? Just a
USB mass storage? Or again using gtkpod?

Yup it's just a flash drive as far as linux is concerned, the downside right now is that none of the linux ipod software works with it, I've tried gnupo d and gtkpod so far with no luck. and iTunes 4.7 is required to sync, so it won't work with crossover either

Just got mine. It appears to be just plain old USB mass storage.
Mounted in w/o any issues using: mount -t vfat /dev/uba1 /mnt/usb
Haven't tried anything too fancy yet, but the directory structure, with
just one song on it is listed below.
The device shows up as:
cat /proc/bus/usb gives:

Anyway, the shuffle is awesome, especially if you don't really care to
know what you're listening to, since it doesn't have a display.

If you copy another song to it, will it play that song in rotation
automatically? Or does it require bullshit proprietary playlist setup
software like iTunes?

Does gtkpod work with it? Gtkpod on my ipod 40g handles all of the stuff
that iTunes normally would.

sorry for not responding. I gave the shuffle to my wife as a birthday
present, and now she won't let me near it :-)) I see if I can get to
it one of these days to do some "experiments" on it.. .

Yep, works like a charm. I have a 1GB Shuffle, and one of my workstations at the office is a Power Ma c G4 running Gentoo Linux. I installed gtkpod 0.85 on it via portage. I mounted the Shuffle using: modprobe usb_storage mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/ipod Once it was mounted, gtkpod was nice and happy.
